The Washington Redskins entered Thursday with $22 million in salary cap room, according to someone with knowledge of the team’s financial situation. The Redskins then made four moves to create another chunk of space for Coach Mike Shanahan and General Manager Bruce Allen to work with as they continue to re-shape the team’s roster.

By trading Albert Haynesworth (who carried a salary cap figure of $5.4 million) and cutting center Casey Rabach ($3 million cap figure), nose tackle Ma’ake Kemoeatu ($2.5 million) and defensive end Phillip Daniels ($1.25 million), the Redskins freed up another $12.15 million in cap room.

That meant Washington was $34.15 million under the $120 million salary cap.

But you can take that to mean the Redskins are far from done in free agency. They have obvious needs remaining. They still are working on signing their entire rookie draft class. And of their 12 players that were free agents, only Santana Moss has been re-signed.

Washington’s goal is to re-sign quarterback Rex Grossman, and Shanahan has also expressed a desire to re-sign right tackle Jammal Brown. Defensive lineman Kedric Golston, linebackers Rocky McIntosh, Chris Wilson and H.B. Blades, safety Reed Doughty all want to return. But it appears that Washington is content to let McIntosh walk. The same applies for cornerback Carlos Rogers.

The Redskins still need help at guard, especially now that Rabach has been released and guard/centers Will Montgomery and Kory Lichtensteiger are expected to compete for the starting center job.

The Redskins have signed defensive linemen Barry Cofield and Stephen Bowen to bolster their 3-4 front, and they added cornerback Josh Wilson, who likely will start. Donte Stallworth and Jabar Gaffney were added to the receiving corps, but neither are the big-name target types that some expected Washington would land.

The Redskins are allowed to carry 90 players on their training camp roster, but currently have around 25 players, give or take, left to add.

What will they do with the rest of their salary cap room?
