Redskins re-sign TE Dominique Byrd

Short on bodies at the tight end position, the Washington Redskins have re-signed Dominique Byrd nearly a month after they waived him.

Byrd, a third-year pro, spent roughly three weeks with the Redskins earlier this season, but never appeared in a game. He was slotted behind Fred Davis, Logan Paulsen and Mike Sellers. The USC product appeared in one game for the Seattle Seahawks this season but didn’t record a catch.

Since he was waived by the Redskins, Byrd remained in the area, living with Davis, his former USC teammate and training on his own at an area gym.

“I just wanted to keep my mind wrapped around working hard and being ready if I got another opportunity,” Byrd said. “I just hope to show them I’m ready to contribute if they call my number, show I’m ready. That takes being in the playbook, being focused in practice and taking it a day at a time.”

The 6-foot-3, 255-pound Byrd is expected to be behind Logan Paulsen and Mike Sellers on the tight end depth chart.

As a close friend of Davis's, Byrd would have rather returned to the Redskins under different circumstances, but he said he remains supportive of the suspended tight end and expects Davis to stay focused as he looks toward returning to action next season.

“Fred’s like a brother to me. I hold him up in high spirits, and pray for him every day. He’ll take the high road on all this," Byrd said. "I’ve been with him every day. As this thing was coming, he was very mature about it, standing up to exactly what he did. I think that’s the most positive outlook that he could have.”

Bad football, worse decisions
