The Washington Redskins have signed free agent kicker Clint Stitser to their roster, according to two people with knowledge of the situation.
Stitser appeared in five games for the Cincinnati Bengals as a rookie out of Fresno State last season, and made seven of eight field goal attempts and eight of 10 extra point attempts. The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder averaged 58.7 yards per kickoff.
Redskins coach Mike Shanahan following the Wednesday morning practice said that the team likely would sign another kicker that day because Graham Gano left practice after receiving word that his wife had gone into labor. Gano’s availability for Friday’s game at Indianapolis is in question.
The Redskins already were planning to give Gano more competition after they released Shayne Graham on Sunday. Graham was 0-for-2 on field goals in Washington’s preseason game against Pittsburgh last Friday. Gano made all three of his attempts.
But special teams coach Danny Smith said Sunday that the team hadn’t yet resolved its kicking situation, and Shanahan said the team could add another kicker to compete with Gano, who last season missed 11 field goals.
Washington worked out several kickers Wednesday, and later signed Stitser, who had been working in real estate while waiting for another chance with an NFL team.
