Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Monday the team has signed veteran offensive tackle Jordan Black.

Black (6-foot-5, 305 pounds) will provide backup for a Redskins offensive line that already has been depleted by injuries. Right tackle Jammal Brown opened camp on the physically unable to perform list as he continues to rehab his surgically repaired right hip.

Shanahan said Monday that left guard Kory Lichtensteiger had his surgically repaired knee scoped to remove cartilage debris. The coach said Lichtensteiger is expected to return for the regular season opener.

Black went to training camp with the New Orleans Saints last season, but he was released before the regular season began. He played in 15 games (including nine starts) for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2010.

In all, Black has logged time in 80 games (40 starts) during his nine-year career. He started 15 games in 2006 for the Kansas City Chiefs, who had selected him in the fifth round of the NFL draft three years earlier out of Notre Dame.
