Ron Springs, the former Dallas Cowboys running back whose son Shawn starred at Springbrook High School and for five seasons with the Redskins, died Thursday at a Dallas hospital. He was 54. He had spent the past four years in a coma after losing oxygen during surgery in 2007.

Jason La Canfora wrote for The Post in 2008 about Shawn Springs’s difficulty coping with his father’s coma, and in 2005 about Shawn’s offer to quit football in order to donate a kidney to his father. (Ron Springs refused the offer, and eventually received a kidney from Everson Walls, his former Cowboys teammate.)
