The Washington Redskins carry only two quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, and on Sunday with Rex Grossman sick with pneumonia, Mike Shanahan didn't have a backup passer on the sidelines.

Grossman, who had a fever of 103, watched the game on television in the locker room while hooked up to an IV, but would have emerged and taken the field had John Beck gotten hurt.

But what if Beck had gotten hurt and Grossman either was too sick to play or got hurt as well?

Shanahan said the Redskins have “a number of players” who practice taking snaps and handing off. The coach said receiver Terrence Austin “probably” would have gotten the nod against the Panthers.

If one of the quarterbacks got seriously hurt during the week and were unable to suit up, practice squad passer Jonathan Crompton could be activated.
