Last push for summer entertainment

In many cases, this week and early next is your last chance to revel in outdoor entertainment opportunities. Here’s a selection of concert and film series ending soon. (And all is not lost if you can’t get out this week — the National Gallery of Art’s Jazz in the Garden series continues until Sept. 9, and the U Street film series doesn’t show its last movie until Sept. 20.)


Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival: ‘SNL in the Movies’

The last summer film screening in Rosslyn’s Gateway Park on Friday features the jolly green giant so many hold so dear, “Shrek.” The animated film stars the voices of “Saturday Night Live” alums Mike Myers and Eddie Murphy, in keeping with the theme of the series.

Starlight Cinema

Centreville’s August Starlight Cinema drive-in series is short but sweet. On Saturday, the last of the month’s four family-friendly outdoor films is “Megamind.”

Crystal Screen: By the Numbers

Crystal City’s summer film series this year has featured movies with numbers in their titles. On the heels of “500 Days of Summer,” “Apollo 13” and “16 Candles” comes “2001: A Space Odyssey” to conclude the season on Monday.


Navy Band Summer Concert Series

The U.S. Navy Band celebrates 100 years of naval aviation in one of its last summer concerts tonight at the Navy Memorial.

Rosslyn Lunchtime Summer Concert Series

On Wednesday, Maggie Sansone’s Celtic Duo will transport you back in time with her hammered dulcimer and Celtic harp. Then, next Wednesday, Joie Sherman and John Johnson of the duo North Meets South take the stage with their blend of Americana and rock.

Friday Night Live

Party band Gonzo’s Nose plays from a catalogue of hundreds of dance favorites that will have attendees on their feet friday on the Herndon Town Green.

National Harbor free concert series

Friday’s concert features local band the Texas Chainsaw Horns. On Saturday, the Southern Winds Band plays country and rock.

Celebrate Frederick Summer Concert Series Hear oldies made famous by the likes of Elvis Presley, Jimmy Buffett and the Temptations performed by local group the Rock & Roll Relics at the last of Frederick’s Sunday evening concerts.
