Weekend Update: 10 eye-opening art objects to ponder

(Lee Stalsworth/For the Washington Post)

In today’s Weekend section, we picked 10 amazing art objects, and we’re inviting you to choose your favorite. Possibilities range from a portrait of Kate Moss at the National Portrait Gallery to an all-orange room at the Arlington Arts Center. There’s even a 29-foot-wide print that’s made up of tens of thousands of tiny figures, each smaller than a dime. Check them out in our photo gallery, and then vote in our poll. And go see them — many are on exhibit for only a short time.

Here’s what else you can find in today’s Weekend:

Our Friday, Saturday and Sunday picks, including Redskins Fan Appreciation Day, the Dog Days of August sidewalk sale and the National Aquarium’s 30th anniversary celebration.

•Looking for yoga that doesn’t stretch your wallet? There are a bunch of free and outdoor yoga sessions coming up, including on where you can bring your pup along (and have drinks).

•What is D.C.’s most essential dish or drink? Tell us.

•Album reviews of bands playing this week: Fountains of Wayne (Sunday and Monday at the Birchmere); the Band of Heathens (Thursday at Hill Country); Eric Johnson (Tuesday at the Birchmere); Woods, with Kurt Vile (Wednesday at Rock & Roll Hotel); and Memory Tapes (Tuesday at Red Palace).

•At Number Nine, a gay lounge reopens in the former Halo space with one of the best happy hours in town.

•Try this: Weekly trail runs with Capital Striders.

•At Luke’s Lobster near Verizon Center, the simple and tasty lobster roll is a family affair.

•Everything you need to know about what’s on stage in August.

New at the movies this weekend: “Rise of the Planet Apes” and the Jason Bateman-Ryan Reynolds body switching comedy “The Change-Up.”

Alex Baldinger is editor of the Going Out Guide blog, which covers food, drink, arts, music, events and other curiosities in the D.C. area. He is forever in search of a great sandwich.
