Montgomery County residents have new reason to hit the ice, now that a new outdoor ice-skating rink has opened at Rockville Town Square.

At 7,200 square feet, the new, $500,000 ice rink at Rockville Town Square is being billed as the county’s largest outdoor rink . It’s also far larger than the 3,700-square-foot temporary, plastic rink (there was no actual ice) that stood at the square back in 2009.

The rink will be closed for a chunk of the day Wednesday (from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m.) to prepare for the event, but will reopen at 7:30 and stay open till 10 p.m. Admission is $7-$8.

In just the first few nights in business, the rink has done almost as much business as the plastic rink did the whole season in 2009, a spokeswoman for Federal Realty said. Federal Realty also operates the Pentagon Row rink.

Because the rink is real ice, rain and warm temperatures can mean closures during the season; call 301-545-1999 for updates.
