What is sculpture? A lively and at times cantankerous group exhibition at Edison Place Gallery invites viewers to entertain the notion of sculpture as performance, conceptual art, photography and other media not traditionally thought of as belonging to this most object-based of art forms. “Sculpture Now 2012,” an annual juried showcase of the medium sponsored by the Washington Sculptors Group, includes works by 31 artists, selected by Sarah Newman, curator of contemporary art at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

The idea of transformation is central to the exhibition, whose best artists don’t just manipulation form but metamorphose it, in some cases literally altering an object’s physical properties.
