Also performing on the main stage will be epic instrumental rockers Explosions in the Sky, soul-rock group Fitz and the Tantrums, on-the-rise rapper A$AP Rocky and pop-rock upstarts Fun. This year’s expanded concert features a second stage with a list of artists to be announced. Hopefully, we’ll see some locals picked there.
Except for the Shins, who fill the early ‘00s nostalgia slot like the Strokes did last year, the lineup is in keeping with the festival’s tradition of picking acts to appeal to a very young crowd. It’s a nicely diverse set, even if it does lack a true standout act.
The concert is presented by local eatery Sweetgreen, which has placed almost as big an emphasis on music as it has on salad after opening its first location in Georgtown in 2007. Hot Chip, U.S. Royalty and Phil Ade played at the inaugural festival in 2010 held behind Sweetgreen’s Dupont Circle location. The festival moved way up in size last year with the move to Merriweather at a show featuring the Strokes , Girl Talk, Crystal Castles, Lupe Fiasco and more. Sweetgreen also hosts occasional free afternoon mini-concerts at its downtown locations. Groups such as Toro y Moi, Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. and Tapes n’ Tapes have performed for lunchtime crowds.
Tickets are $75 ($125 for VIP) and they go on sale Friday at 10 a.m. through Ticketfly.
