The husband and wife behind Washington’s top Ethiopian dining room, Ethiopic in the Atlas District, are poised to open a bakery right next door.

Fresh injera, perhaps? Not quite. Try apple turnovers and croissants. Batter Bowl Bakery, at 403 H St. NE, will be “completely different” from their restaurant, says Meseret Bekele, who co-owns Ethiopic with her husband, Samuel Ergete.

“We’re trying to fill a void” in the neighborhood, says Bekele.  Inspired in part by her brother, who worked as a pastry chef in Germany, the couple plans to open for breakfast and lunch, eventually for dinner. While a chef has been hired, the name is being kept as a surprise.

The 25-seat bakery is expected to open by year’s end. Bekele is serious about keeping the family businesses separate. In other words, don’t expect Ethiopian coffee at Batter Bowl. “We signed with Illy,” she says.
