Chef Tom Power describes the planned interior of Baby Wale as "a very raw space." Construction is expected to begin by December. (EDIT)

But he isn’t backing away from a clothes-minded tag. The new name for the 140-seat bar and dining room he hopes to open next to Corduroy at 1124 Ninth St. NW is Baby Wale, representing “the smallest weave of corduroy,” Power says in all seriousness.

Baby Wale is intended to be “the opposite of Corduroy.” Picture “a very raw space” packaged in brick and with more of a “barlike” design, says the chef. His long-time sous chef, Paul Gomes, has been tapped to oversee the menu of pizza, pupusas and “different fun things,” none of which will cost more than $20. Construction is expected to begin in November or December.

Sound familiar? This is the third time Power has reconsidered the name of his latest project. Originally, it was billed as Velour, which he nixed after a movie about a porn star, “Meet Monica Velour,” came out two years ago.
