Construction on the approximately 200-seat, two-level District of Pi at 910 F St. NW began in November. Instead of waiting for the renovations to be completed, general manager Coby Arzola says the St. Louis-based company decided to start a food truck in February to cultivate a local fan base.
Arzola says the food truck has helped Pi become more familiar to the D.C. consumer. If you’ve exhausted the four choices at the food truck, the restaurant promises more options and even thin-crust pizza for those not down with the deep dish. “Most people don’t know that while deep dish is certainly what we’re known for, we also do thin-crust pizza,” says Arzola.
The new space features two ovens, one for deep dish and one for thin crust. There are six deep-dish and five thin-crust pizzas on the menu, but each pizza can be ordered either way. You can also create your own, choosing from such meat and veggie toppings as prosciutto, anchovies and artichoke hearts.
The restaurant menu also boasts a selection of small plates that are not available at the four St. Louis locations. These “pi snacks” — such as marinated cucumbers with Thai chili and genoa salami with roasted red peppers — will be prominently featured during happy hour, which runs every day except Saturday, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Happy hour also includes $5 wines and $4 draft beers (there are 24 beers on draft).
If brunch is more your speed, the restaurant opens at 10 a.m. on Sundays, serving items such as the “breakfast pi,” which uses eggs instead of tomato sauce for more of a quiche texture.
Arzola says he is looking forward to the possibilities of the restaurant. “Now we get to expose everyone to the full line of what we do.”
