There are even more tributes on the horizon at some of D.C.’s top R&B-centric events. Grits and Gravy, the throwback funk and soul throwdown at Jin, is turning its attention to Whitney during a party that was originally going to feature the sounds of Motown and the Civil Rights era. (It will now honor both.)
Over Presidents’ Day weekend, Liv’s soulful Daylight DJ night, which is rooted in the disco and funk of the ’70s and ’80s, will honor both Whitney Houston and “Soul Train” founder Don Cornelius, who died earlier this month, with veterans Bill Source and Divine upon the wheels of steel Sunday night. With no work or school Monday for many people, this is going to be an ecstatic celebration that goes late into the night.
And while it’s not officially a tribute party, you can expect DJ Jahsonic to drop a few Whitney tracks at Marvin tonight during his weekly Main Ingredient set; after all, his set in honor of Michael Jackson is deservedly legendary.
If we hear about more parties in honor of Whitney, we’ll add them here.
