Specifically, the family-friendly movie “Dolphin Tale” rose from third place to first in its second week of release, making it the No.1 movie in America. It earned $14.2 million over the weekend, while “Moneyball” made $12.5 million to land at No. 2.
“Lion King 3D” still finished strong, if not first.
The re-release of the Disney favorite still managed a third-place finish, with another $11.2 million to add to its tally. Not bad considering that the new Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D release — the one this whole brief theatrical run was designed to promote — comes out on Tuesday.
The cancer dramedy starring Joseph Gordon Levitt and Rogen was the most popular of the new releases, but just barely. “50/50” raked in a projected $8.85 million, putting it in fourth place for the weekend. But “Courageous” — the film about fatherhood and faith that targeted a church-going audience — was close behind it with $8.8 million. That’s a significant figure when one considers that “Courageous” was shown on half as many screens around the country as “50/50” was. According to Box Office Mojo, that total also makes it the fifth strongest opening of all time for a Christian movie, behind “Passion of the Christ” and the three “Chronicles of Narnia” films. It will be interesting to see if “Courageous” utimately leapfrogs “50/50” when final box office numbers are released Monday.
Anna Faris’s 'Number’ is not high.
“What’s Your Number?,” the latest attempt to give the talented Faris star billing in a comedy, flopped at the box office. The movie finished in eighth place with $5.6 million, less than both “The House Bunny” and “Observe and Report” amassed in their debut weekends. Maybe she can take some consolation in the fact that husband Chris Pratt’s ”Moneyball” is still doing well ... maybe?
Here are the top five movies at the weekend box office:
1. “Dolphin Tale” — $14.2 million
2. “Moneyball” — $12.5 million
3. “The Lion King 3D” -- $11 million
4. “50/50” — $8.85 million
5. “Courageous" — $8.8 million
