Tacos, the hot food du jour, made the cover of Washingtonian’s Cheap Eats issue. These ones came from Taqueria La Placita in Hyattsville.

Just as our wallets are pretty much drained after a summer of travel/wanton lobster roll spending, what should arrive on newstands but Washingtonian’s annual Cheap Eats issue? And with insanely delicious-looking tacos on the cover, no less.

On the list of the best, most budget-friendly fare in this consistently pricey dining town? Some of our favorite places, including Bar Pilar, whose buttermilk pie and crispy potatoes with malt aioli got a shout-out; Bayou Bakery, with its standout veggie sandwich; and Honey Pig, which was on our list of best places to indulge in the fourth meal. But the list also sends some love to lesser-known places such as Bollywood Bistro in Fairfax (where you have to try the palak chaat with a kick of green mango) and The Pure Pasty Co., with its British-style handpie.

More fascinating was what was on the list last year that got bumped this year: The General Store (well, yeah...), Surfside, Tackle Box and Eamonn’s, among others. The magazine noted that almost a third of this year’s list was made up of newcomers. [Washingtonian]

After all sorts of issues with getting a liquor license — and allegations it served alcohol without one anywayShaw’s Tavern closed over the weekend after trying to make a go of being a tavern for teetotalers. It posted the announcement on Facebook, saying “We will re-open when we’re allowed to serve alcohol.” Yet it left the large pronouncement “We are officially open” up on its Web site. The Express described the mood at the bar...err, restaurant... as “funereal” in the days leading up to the closure. [Washington City Paper]

If you’re planning on a Labor Day weekend getaway to Harpers Ferry, the blog Greater Greater Washington came up with a handy guide to getting there, sans car. Yup — who knew? — you can get there by Amtrak or Marc train. Lots of good details on where to stay overnight, what to do and where to eat (though we’re going to dock points for referring to the historic place as Harper’s Ferry). [Greater Greater Washington]

And finally, it’s Michael Jackson’s birthday; TBD has a list of the MJ goings-on around town, including the DJ Jahsonic’s tribute tonight at Marvin. [TBD]
