King John

Taffety Punk must love a good challenge. How else to explain the company’s annual Bootleg Shakespeare performance, in which actors rehearse a play by the Bard just once, the day of the show, before the curtain rises that evening? This year’s selection is one of Shakespeare’s rarely-performed history plays. Tickets for the show -- which will sell out if past years are any indication -- are available starting at noon at the Folger Theatre box office. Once those are snapped up, there will be a line for standing room only.

Beauty Pill

Through today, local rock band Beauty Pill records their new album in Artisphere’s Black Box Theatre, where members of the public can watch the process unfold firsthand. Catch the band at the tail end of the recording process.

Orquesta la Romana at Strathmore

This summer, Strathmore’s international summer concert series has already hosted performers from Cameroon, Germany and Israel. This week, Latin American ensemble Edwin Ortiz and Orquesta La Romana bring their emminently danceable salsa rhythms to the outdoor venue.

‘E8: Sculpture’ reception

Transformer’s 8th annual Exercises for Emerging Artists allows three artists the opportunity for creative growth through critiques and mentoring. One of these artists, Sean Lundgren, exhibits his new work, “Nave,” which will be on view through August 13. Meet the artist at an opening reception.

La Comedie Humaine

The Made in Hong Kong film festival highlights the area’s dynamic and diverse film industry through August 21. “La Comedie Humaine” promises to be one of the funniest selections. The film stars Chapman To as hit man Spring, who develops an unlikely friendship with screenwriter Soya (played by Hong Kong TV star Wong Cho-lam).

30th Anniversary at the National Aquarium

Anyone who has enjoyed watching the dolphins jump and play or the sharks flash their pearly whites at Baltimore’s National Aquarium will be pleased to know that the aquarium turns 30 this year. To celebrate, head to the all-ages birthday bash outside the aquarium on the pier, complete with music, dancing, face painting, art projects, and even zumba instruction.
