The last day of Rockville’s Memorial Day weekend festival includes a parade and Memorial Day ceremony, along with a performance by the Rockville Concert Band and the Rockville Chorus.


To the moon and back

On May 25, 1961, 50 years ago, President John F. Kennedy announced to the world, “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal before this decade is out of landing a man on the moon.” John Logsdon, former fellow with the museum’s aeronautics division and author of the book “John F. Kennedy and the Race to the Moon,” gives his insights on what went into that historic decision and what kind of legacy it has left behind.


DC Jazz Festival: Berklee World Jazz Octet

Today through June 13, the DC Jazz Festival puts on dozens of concerts at venues throughout the city. The Berklee World Jazz Octet from Berklee College of Music gets the swinging started with their eclectic international repertoire of improvised music.


Will Barnet: Birthday Party and Gallery Reception

Artist WillBarnet, the subject of an exhibit at VisArts at Rockville, just turned a full century old. Peruse a collection of lithographs the artist made from the 60s through the 90s at a reception in honor of the New York-based artist, with comments from collector Janet Laylor and an auction of a signed Barnet print. Food and beverages will be served.

Closing: ‘kin*

As the Jewish grandson of Holocaust survivors, photographer Adam Golfer’s work explores his at times conflicted relationship with his German heritage. The images in this exhibit, taken on a recent trip to Germany, capture German youth of the same generation as the artist. See the photos before the exhibit closes.


Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie Festival

This new festival, meant to emulate the feel of Austin’s South by Southwest, showcases more than 100 bands at six different venues along the U Street Corridor through Sunday. Local acts Loose Lips, the Jet Age, Hiding Places and Lenorable all perform throughout the weekend.


Tastes of Africa/Saveurs d’Afrique

Now in its third consecutive year, taste a variety of dishes from more than 40 African countries at this family event. Art shows, three fashion shows with designs from Ethiopia, the Ivory Coast and Cameroon and traditional and modern dance performances add flavor as well.
