Free funk from George Clinton on a beautiful night — how can you go wrong? (Kyle Gustafson/FTWP)

Any appearance by George Clinton is reason enough to remind you of Chris Richards’ fantastic 2010 article in which he went searching through the Maryland woods trying to find The Mothership, the original version of legendary stage prop that defined the band’s legendary concerts in the 1970s.

Also performing at the 6 p.m. show are standout bassist Meshell Ndegeocello (Sarah Godfrey reviewed her most recent album, “Weather,” for The Post in November) and Ivan Neville and Dumpstaphunk.

The concert will be in a tent between 12th and 14th streets. In between acts, radio personality Tom Joyner will conduct on-stage interviews that focus on the importance and impact of funk music.
