A couple of highly anticipated stage productions about real life characters are headed our way, and tonight you can get a sneak peek of both.

The promising show “Red,” meanwhile, arrives at Arena Stage in mid-January. The production, which stars local stage dynamo Edward Gero (who portrayed the demon barber in Signature’s “Sweeney Todd” and is currently bah humbug-ing in “A Christmas Carol” at Ford’s Theater), takes a deep dive into the psyche of troubled painter Mark Rothko.

Gero reads excerpts of the production tonight during Phillips After 5, which means you can get a taste of the painter’s life before checking out some of his masterpieces, part of the museum’s permanent collection.
