Young poets

Fifty-three students from across the country will descend on the Harman Center for the Arts to recite poetry for “Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest.” Only nine finalists will advance to the final round Tuesday.


Architecture and Art: Creating Community

Architects David Adjaye, Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, along with Tom Finkelpearl, the executive director of the Queens Museum of Art, and art historian Sarah E. Lewis, will participate in a panel discussion on art and architecture in public spaces.


Haitian-Dominican Friendship Concert

Tabou Combo, playing Haitian merengue music, and Enriquillo Tejada y Los Clarinetes Magico, performing Latin jazz, will take part in a concert celebrating the music of Haiti and the Dominican Republic.


For the love of shoes

Take in a screening of “God Save My Shoes,” a documentary about the relationship between women and their shoes that features shoe designers such as Manolo Blahnik, Christian Louboutin and Walter Steiger. It’s part of the Bethesda fashion event “The Front Row.”

Joint Service Open House

Head to Joint Base Andrews for an aerial show featuring the Navy’s Blue Angels and the Army’s Golden Knights parachute team, and get an up-close look at World War II-era fighter planes and bombers as well as the latest technology. Also on Sunday.


Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival

Reston Town Center is host to the work of more than 200 contemporary artists, as well as music, performance art and hands-on children’s projects. Also on Saturday.
