A long weekend means there are plenty of chances to party and enjoy a cold drink — check out our list of July 4th-themed parties in addition to the weekly Nightlife Agenda — but there are two beer-related events that should be on your radar this weekend: DC Brau is hosting a growler fill at its Northeast Washington brewery for the first time on Saturday, and all three Pizzeria Paradiso restaurants become hop-head heaven during the month-long JulyPA festival.

Let’s start with DC Brau, which will be filling growlers with its Public Pale Ale and Corruption IPA between 1 and 2 p.m. at its brewery on Bladensburg Road NE. No, that’s not a misprint — they will be open for exactly one hour, since they have only one keg of each beer to put into growlers. Co-founder Brandon Skall says they were going to wait until there was more beer in stock, but “then we decided we want people to be able to take this beer to a barbecue or a friend’s picnic on July 4.”

You can buy a snazzy DC Brau logo-growler filled with beer for $16, or bring your own growler to fill for $10. If you can’t make it Saturday, Skall says weekly tours and tastings at the brewery will begin in August.

Meanwhile, hop lovers should pencil in a visit to one of the area’s three Pizzeria Paradiso locations this weekend. Every tap — that’s 42 in all — and all three casks will feature an India Pale Ale as part of Paradiso’s second JulyPA festival. While most people associate IPAs with huge, piney, bitter flavors, beer director Greg Jasgur has done a good job mixing up the hop-bombs (Terrapin Hopsicutioner, Founders Devil Dancer, Lagunitas a Little Sumpin Sumpin) with more subtle IPAs, including English IPAs from the Thornbridge brewery and Draft Punk from Baltimore’s Pratt Street Ale House.

Many of these beers are hard to find or released in limited quantities, Jasgur says, and when they’re gone, they’re gone. He does have a few tricks up his sleeve, though: Watch the updated draft lists on eatyourpizza.com and keep an eye out for such treasures as Devil’s Backbone Ten Point IPA, Dogfish Hell Hound Ale, Uinta Dubhe Imperial Black IPA and Harpoon Leviathan.
