Some people drink champagne with oysters, but few things taste as good with oysters as a good oyster stout. P.J. Clarke’s is celebrating Virginia’s bounty of oysters and beer with Oysters and Pints on the Patio today from 3:30 to 7 p.m. Get $1 oysters from the War Shore Oyster Company (based on Virginia’s Eastern Shore) and $2 brews from Alexandria’s Port City Brewing Company.


Taps from Michigan’s New Holland Brewing Company pop up around town fairly often -- usually the Full Circle Kolsch or the Poet oatmeal stout. This Friday, in celebration of the brewery’s anniversary, the Black Squirrel is hosting a Mad Hatter Tea Party with six varieties of New Holland’s Mad Hatter IPA, including White Hatter (a Belgian white IPA), the Oak-Aged Hatter, which was aged in oak barrels, and Farmhouse Hatter, an IPA made with a Belgian saison yeast. Tea sandwiches and cakes will be served along with the beer, beginning at 5 p.m.


Beers from the Russian River Brewing Company are rare in this part of the world. The California brewery makes gorgeous and intensely hopped beers that regularly top best-of lists for beer geeks (Pliny the Elder is one of the few IPAs to earn a perfect score on leading site Beer Advocate) but are only shipped to the Pacific Northwest, Denver and Philadelphia. On Saturday afternoon, though, Churchkey is pouring samples of five different Russian River beers. Hopheads will be into the aforementioned Pliny the Elder, which was only bottled on June 22, and Blind Pig IPA. Belgian fans can try the famous Supplication (a dark Belgian ale aged in pinot noir barrels with sour cherries), Consecration (another dark Belgian aged in cabernet sauvignon barrels with currants) and Sanctification (a Belgian golden ale fermented with brettanomyces yeast for sour flavors).


It has been two years since Meridian Pint opened its doors, and the Columbia Heights beer bar is celebrating its second anniversary by pouring $2 local beers from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. and running a barbecue manned by Smoke and Barrel chef Logan Grear on the patio from 3 to 8 p.m.
