James Canty, Steve Gamboa, Ian Svenonius and Michelle Mae of the Make-Up. (Pat Graham)

Everybody has their favorites, but the Make-Up were always my pick as the single best live act in D.C. in the ’90s. A Make-Up concert was always a frenetic soul-punk revue, with irrepressible frontman Ian Svenonius leading the audience through call-and-response shouts (“Let me hear you say yeah!” was a common refrain), as he spasmed, squealed, shrieked and occasionally walked on top of the audience. (I saw this happen at least once.) Watch the video below and you’ll understand.

We can only hope that at least one local show will happen later in 2012. Fort Reno just put out its annual call for submissions … wouldn’t a free Make-Up show on a hot D.C. summer night be just the most sensationally sweaty thing you can imagine?
