The Monster Burger at Duffy's Irish Pub is a half-pound beef patty, onions and bacon wedged between two -- two! -- grilled cheese sandwiches. (Alex Baldinger/The Washington Post)

This Thing You Should Try is an occasional feature about unusual (and, most likely, unhealthy) food and drink in the D.C. area that, well, you should try, perhaps no more than once.

From foie gras to a fried egg, you can get just about anything on a burger in this town, but you can’t get a burger on anything quite as easily. Unless you’re at Duffy’s Irish Pub, home of the Monster Burger.

From the menu: A 1/2 pound burger with bacon and grilled onion, but instead of a bun we use two grilled cheese sandwiches....yes, you read that correctly; it is a half pound burger nestled comfortably in between two grilled cheese sandwiches and it is delicious!! Served with fries, tots, or fresh steamed veggies.

I tackled this beast with two friends last night, and one Monster was more than enough for the three of us. It’s hard to dislike the calories-be-damned goodness of the individual components here: a pair of cafeteria-style grilled cheese sandwiches (with tomato!) and a bacon-topped burger. It also packed enough blunt force sodium to dehydrate a waterbed. But hey, at least you can order it with a side of steamed veggies.

Would you try the Monster Burger (if only once) if you haven’t already?
