In 39 states, there is a slightly higher number of women than men, according to 2013 data from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Females make up 51.6 percent of the population in Rhode Island and Delaware, the highest rates in the country. Alabama, Maryland, Massachusetts, and New York follow, each with 51.5 percent.

The states with the highest percentage of males are all located in the West. Alaska, with 52.4%, has the highest ratio. North Dakota follows with 51.1 percent.

The only state with a perfect 50-50 balance is Washington. Women make up 50.8 percent of the total U.S. population.

Correction: A previous version of this post misstated the gender balance of Alaska and Hawaii and incorrectly ranked the order of some states. h/t 22 Words
