New Virginia Tech Coach James Johnson completes his staff

New Virginia Tech men’s basketball coach James Johnson completed his staff Tuesday, announcing that former Eastern Michigan assistant Andy Moore has been named director of basketball operations. He joins assistant coaches Mark Byington, Kurt Kanaskie and Ramon Williams on staff.

Moore previously worked as an assistant coach under former Coach Tommy Amaker at Michigan. This past season he worked in game operations at Eastern Michigan following three seasons as a full-time assistant coach there.

“He is an individual that has a wide range of skills and experience in college basketball,” Johnson said in a school-issued statement. “He has worked as an assistant coach at all levels, including time as an assistant coach in the Big Ten and also has worked in all areas of operations. He is a great addition to our staff.”

Moore’s 20-year coaching career also includes stops at Bowling Green, California University of Pennsylvania and Kenyon College.

Mark Giannotto is a Montgomery County native who covers high school sports for The Washington Post. He previously covered Virginia and Virginia Tech football for five years.
