The Virginia Tech men’s basketball team recovered from its first loss of the season Friday, taking third place in the NIT Season Tip-off with a 59-57 victory over Oklahoma State in New York.

The Hokies held on late despite not hitting a field goal over the game’s final 61 / 2 minutes. A key strip by forward Jarell Eddie and freshman Robert Brown in the waning moments helped seal the victory, even though Virginia Tech went 19 of 30 from the free throw line

Junior Erick Green led the Hokies with 18 points and freshman Dorian Finney-Smith had his third double-double of the season with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Brown added eight points, all of which came in the first half when Virginia Tech used a 14-0 run to take the lead for good after a sluggish start.

The Hokies, coming off a loss to No. 5 Syracuse on Wednesday night, shot just 32.7 percent from the field. But Virginia Tech was able to overcome that by grabbing a season-high 18 21 offensive rebounds. Finney-Smith accounted for eight of those by himself.

Here’s the Associated Press story from Madison Square Garden.Virginia Tech and Oklahoma State will face each other again on New Year’s Eve in Stillwater, Okla., for a previously scheduled matchup.

But the Hokies don’t have much time to savor this trip to the Big Apple. They face St. Bonaventure on Sunday in Blacksburg, followed by a road game at Minnesota on Wednesday for the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Bonnies took Virginia Tech to overtime last year and return four starters, including forward Andrew Nicholson (19 points, 7.7 rebounds per game this year).
