Virginia Tech place kicker Cody Journell reinstated to football team

Virginia Tech place kicker Cody Journell has been reinstated to the football team in time for the 2012-13 season, Athletic Director Jim Weaver announced Friday afternoon.

Journell, a rising redshirt junior, had been suspended from football activities indefinitely after a December incident that resulted in him pleading guilty to misdemeanor trespassing in May.

“Cody has fulfilled all of the obligations in conjunction with his suspension and is back as an active member of the team,” Weaver said in a school-issued statement.

Journell was suspended a week before the Sugar Bowl after being arrested on felony breaking-and-entering charges when he and two others went to the residence of former Virginia Tech basketball player Dorenzo Hudson and Sean Allen with an airgun over a botched drug transaction, according to arrest warrants.

Virginia Tech policy mandates that any student-athlete charged with a felony must be suspended indefinitely until the charge is resolved or dropped. The Ripplemead, Va., native originally faced felony charges because investigators couldn’t immediately determine whether the air gun was a deadly weapon or not. Journell spent nearly a week in jail before being released on a $100,000 secured bond.

As part of his misdemeanor plea agreement, Journell received one year of probation and had to complete 100 hours of community service.

In his first year as the Hokies’ starting place kicker, Journell earned honorable mention all-ACC honors by making 14 of his 17 field goal attempts and 43 of his 44 extra points.
