More than $1.8 million in grants for the acquisition of battlefield land was announced today by the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program (ABPP).

Five of the dollar-for-dollar federal matching grants were given to Virginia and one to Louisiana. The grant money was made available under the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2012, which provided almost $9 million for battlefield land purchase, according to a press release from the National Park Service.

The latest grants will be used to purchase about 311 acres at the six locations.

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation will receive the grants for Appomattox Court House Battlefield (49 acres), Cedar Mountain Battlefield (4 acres), Chancellorsville Battlefield (81 acres), Sailor’s Creek Battlefield (126 acres) and Buckland Mills Battlefield (50 acres).

The Louisiana Office of State Parks will receive a grant to purchase just less than an acre at Mansfield Battlefield.
