If the federal government does close down this weekend, the National Park Service will be forced to close Fort Sumter just as the 150th commemoration of the start of the Civil War is getting underway. Most historians date the beginning of the war to the April 12-13 bombardment of the fort by Confederate forces.

Plans to mark the first battle of the war include hundreds of Union and Confederate re-enactors camping in Fort Sumter and nearby Fort Moultrie, another Park Service site. Charleston City Paper reporter Greg Hambrick has more on the situation.
