Two Civil War conferences planned in Florida

Learning more about the Civil War doesn’t have to be at battlefields or even in cold places. The Civil War Education Association (CWEA) offers a three-day conference at Sarasota beginning on Jan. 23 and The Stephen D. Lee Institute has another at St. Augustine on Feb. 1 and 2.

The CWEA has held its winter forum in Saratoga for 21 years and offers a slate of 13 speakers with a variety of subjects including Abraham Lincoln, the Battle of Vicksburg and the Army of the Potomac. Registration fee is $435 but lower fees are offered for attendance on a single day.

The Lee Institute usually holds its annual forum in a different southern state each year. The Florida Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans will host the event that has six speakers scheduled. Most of them will speak about the Emancipation Proclamation and its effect on the South.

The conference fee is $150.
