The House is on recess, Congress has largely wrapped its 2015 appropriations and budget hearings, and the focus is largely on the looming midterm elections, so there are far fewer events with top federal officials in the witness seats this week. But the one everyone will be watching is Thursday’s Senate Veterans Affairs Committee hearing with Secretary Eric Shinseki in the hot seat. Shinseki, who was subpoenaed by the House last week, is scheduled to appear to discuss the veterans who died because they were forced to wait for VA health care. Some Republicans have called on Shinseki to resign over the VA’s persistent problems. Also this week, Sylvia Mathews Burwell has her second confirmation hearing to be Secretary of Health and Human Services.
