Former U.S. senator George McGovern, remembered for his staunch opposition to the Vietnam War and his lopsided loss to Richard M. Nixon in the 1972 presidential election, died Sunday at 90.

1943: George S. McGovern, a veteran of the Army Air Corps, flew 35 combat missions in B-24 bombers over Europe during World War II. His medals included the Distinguished Flying Cross. (UPI)
