While most of us were focused on whether or not Council member David A. Catania (I-At Large) could turn the tables and defeat Mayor-elect Muriel E. Bowser (D), an even less likely upset happened in Ward 5, where ANC 5C03 Commissioner Robert “Bob” King was unseated by Robert Looper III, by a relatively wide margin. King, who is known locally as the “Mayor of Fort Lincoln,” has only missed two terms since the commissions were created and only two other people have served as long as he did, according to the Office of Advisory Neighborhood Commissions.

Just a few weeks ago, he was even honored by Mayor Vincent C. Gray (D), who ceremonially proclaimed September 29 as Bob King Day. He’s known for busing in senior citizens to get votes and Tuesday, his campaign machine was in full swing per usual. To be clear, King’s time as a commissioner hasn’t been without incident: Some might remember that he was the guy pushing for a ballot initiative that would allow residents to vote on legalizing same-sex marriages.

Alas, Tuesday his reign is over, upended by a 33-year-old construction manager who grew up in D.C. I decided to ask Looper some questions this morning via Twitter. Here’s how it went.
