Financier John Delaney added another $359,000 of his own money to his campaign to be the Democratic candidate for Rep. Roscoe Bartlett’s (R) seat last week, further cementing his financial edge over state Senate Majority Leader Robert Garagiola in Maryland’s most closely-watched congressional race.
With one $284,000 check last Wednesday, Delaney gave himself more money than Garagiola reported raising for the entire pre-primary period of Jan. 1 to March 14. Delaney’s total amount of self-funding now tops $1.7 million, and he has also raised significantly more from outside donors than Garagiola has.
Both candidates are now deploying their best-known surrogates to aid their efforts. Former President Bill Clinton has recorded automated phone calls encouraging district residents to vote for Delaney, while Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) has done the same for Garagiola.
