While Prince George’s County Council spokeswoman Karen Campbell was checking to see whether council member Leslie Johnson’s status has in any way changed, a bill Johnson sponsored to promote financial literacy was withdrawn Wednesday.

Without explanation, Will Campos (D-Hyattsville), fiscal management committee chairman, said the bill had been withdrawn but did not say who withdrew it or why.

Maybe it’s because the council on Tuesday asked Johnson, who last week pleaded guilty to evidence destruction, to step down immediately.

Johnson said in a letter to the council that she would not be stepping aside until July 31, but has not appeared in public at the council since slipping away during Tuesday’s meeting, and does not appear to have come to her Upper Marlboro office Wednesday.

The council also asked Johnson on Tuesday to turn in her county-issued equipment, including her cellphone, car, parking pass and computer. Campbell was checking to see whether Johnson had turned in those items.
