Gov. Martin O’Malley and Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III on Thursday announced a multimillion-dollar deal which would bring a new hospital to the county and create a regional medical network.
At a news conference in Upper Marlboro, Baker and O’Malley said the new system would also include a health sciences campus as part of the University of Maryland system as a way to expand primary health care in Prince George’s. There are about 80,000 uninsured residents in the county, which has a population of about 863,000.
The pact, signed by the officials and representatives from the University of Maryland and its medical system, calls for a new state-of-the-art health-care system and hospital to come on line in the next three to five years at a cost of about $600 million.
