Alston (D-Prince George’s) was also convicted of misconduct in office related to the same episode, in January 2011.

If the verdicts by an Anne Arundel County Circuit Court jury stand, the freshman delegate is likely to lose her seat.

Judge Paul Harris delayed sentencing until after October, when Alston is scheduled to stand trial on separate charges that she misused campaign funds to cover personal expenses, including some for her wedding.

Lawyers for Alston argued that the charges were based on ambiguous statements to investigators from Alston’s aide. In court, the aide told the jury that she did legislative work for Alston from her Lanham law office.

Prosecutors argued that the young woman changed her story in court out of loyalty to Alston, whom she described as her “mentor.”
