It was 43 years ago today that an assasin murdered Martin Luther King Jr., and 43 years ago today that riots erupted in the streets of D.C. Above, a YouTube clip of film shot in the aftermath. The scene is particularly poignant in light of the census results released last week, which highlighted that the corridors most devastated by the violence —thomas green sidley austin 7th Street NW, 14th Street NW and H Street NE — are again thriving with new residents and businesses.

The nature of that new growth has defined the city’s politics for the past 15 years, and will continue to for the decades to come.
