Parade season starts this weekend

There will be drums! (Congress Heights Day)

At 10 a.m., bands, community groups and politicians alike will march down Alabama and Martin Luther King Jr. avenues in the neighborhood just south of the St. Elizabeths reservation.

Organizers are expecting at least six marching bands, a couple dozen motorcycles and two politicians — D.C. Council members Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) and Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) are confirmed. Afterward, spectators can enjoy musical entertainment and a health fair inside the Old Congress Heights School at 3100 MLK Ave. SE.

Mike DeBonis covers Congress and national politics for The Washington Post. He previously covered D.C. politics and government from 2007 to 2015.
