It’s the Obama Barry White party!

While I’d be tickled to attend any party involving the President of the United States and the dearly departed bass crooner, the “Obama-Barry-White Watch Party” is not that. It is merely the Election Night shindig planned by D.C. Council member Marion Barry (D-Ward 8) and his favored State Board of Education candidate, Trayon White (Ward 8).

It is to be held, of course, at Georgene’s, aka Player’s Lounge, a venue that was the subject of some campaign drama. That’s because incumbent White’s challenger, veteran activist Phil Pannell, thought he had reserved the site for his own victory party back in June.

Alas, Pannell says, there was some confusion after George’s owner Steve Thompson took ill, and a representative of the business accepted a deposit from the Barry campaign without knowing about Pannell’s reservation. So now Pannell’s having his party a mile down Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue at Big Chair Coffee.

“It’s much smaller, but why make a big deal out of it?” he said.

Barry declined to respond to the venue-jacking allegations. “If he has a beef, he should talk to Georgene,” he said Monday.
