Hailed by Mayor Vincent C. Gray as “another step forward in modernizing our taxicab industry,” the city unveiled potential uniform color schemes for District taxis today.

Model vehicles with each of the schemes are sitting in the Verizon Center concourse, viewable from windows on Sixth and Seventh streets NW. On Jan. 7, the models will move to Union Station and later to the Washington International Auto Show. Several other possible schemes will be posted at some point on the D.C. Taxicab Commission Web site.

The commission is soliciting feedback via the Twitter hashtag #votedctaxi ahead of an expected vote to set the new paint scheme in the spring. Below, you can ogle the new looks, which have gotten mixed reviews on Twitter so far, as they appear on the four model cars.

A uniform color scheme was mandated in a sweeping taxi overhaul bill passed by the D.C. Council this summer. The bill’s writer, Mary M. Cheh (D-Ward 3), said she not was especially fond of the choices. “I found them to be — some of them, anyway — to be horrid,” she said, adding that the gray-and-red scheme on the Ford C-Max was “pretty okay.”

“I had hoped for something that was clear,” Cheh continued. “It seemed somewhat busy, some of them. I’m wondering if it will be too busy. Maybe it’s good for it to be, shall I say, garish so they’re recognizable.”
