What promises to be a two-week mourning period and celebration of Marion Barry Jr.’s life began Tuesday morning with the placing of condolence books at the John A. Wilson Building.

The public is invited to sign the books Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday this week between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. The books are located in the first-floor lobby of the Wilson Building at 1350 Pennsylvania Ave. NW.

The body of the former mayor and D.C. Council member, who died Sunday morning,  is expected to lie in repose in the Wilson Building, where he was shot by black Muslim radicals in 1977 and from which he governed the city as mayor throughout the 1980s, sometime next week. The condolence books are also expected to be available then.

Plans for a public memorial service are still in the making, but people familiar with the planning said Monday that the event will likely be held next week at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.
