“He’s fine,” Johnson said. “You know, he cares a lot. He hides it really well. But his motor is running pretty hard. Pitchers can have ups and downs like hitters have ups and downs, slumps. Pitchers go through that, too, especially hard throwers. The main thing with my job is to take the pressure off, not feeling like he’s got the weight of this ball club on his shoulders.”

Without Rodriguez, either Tyler Clippard or Ryan Mattheus are the most likely candidates to close.
