Laynce Nix okay, will start Thursday

Laynce Nix hobbled off the field Wednesday night after his one at-bat, a troubling sign given the sore right Achilles’ that has ailed Nix most of this season. But it wasn’t as bad as it looked, he said, and the stiffness he felt will not prevent from playing Thursday, his first start since last Friday in Colorado.

Nix pinch-hit in the seventh inning and hit a slow roller off Cubs left-handed reliever Sean Marshall to shortstop. He sprinted down the line, and after he crossed the first base bag he limped back to the dugout.

“It’s just the conditions here,” Nix said. “It is a little tight. It’s hard to get loose in this stadium – there’s nowhere really to get loose. It’s just kind of shaking the dust off.”

With right-hander Ryan Dempster on the mound, Nix has been told he will start Thursday. It hasn’t been the easiest few days for Nix, who has also been battling the flu. But he said it’s easier for him to keep his Achilles’ loose on days he starts, and he doesn’t anticipate any issues.
