MASN, the team-run network for Nationals games, did not exercise a 2012 option for play-by-play announcer Bob Carpenter by yesterday’s deadline, a Nationals team official said.
The decision, the official said, does not imply Carpenter will or will not return for next season, only that MASN would need to negotiate a new contract for him in the offseason if they intend to keep him – and he intends to stay.
The official described the decision as “collaborative,” that the Nationals, MASN and Carpenter agreed to resolve the situation this offseason. Carpenter did not immediately return a message seeking comment.
UPDATE, 2:14 p.m: According to a person with knowledge of the talks, Carpenter hoped his option for 2012 would be picked up and neither he nor his agent agreed for the optioned not be exercised.
Carpenter joined MASN in 2006 after 10 years as the play-by-play announcer for the St. Louis Cardinals.
