End, 3:52: Bryce Harper ended the Nationals' first loss of spring training with a pop to left. The Nats fell, 7-5. Todd Coffey pitched a scoreless eighth before the Nats went 1-2-3.

Top 8, 3:36: Radio play-by-play man Dave Jageler filled me on the action, and apparently, it wasn't pretty. the Nationals should have gotten out of the sixth without any runs, but pitcher Shairon Martis dropped a flip from Morse while covering first base, which led to a run. The next hitter popped to shallow right, and Danny Espinosa let the ball drop behind. Bryce Harper may or may not have called him off; unclear who was at fault there.

The Nationals scored two in the sixth themselves, on an RBI single by Wilson Ramos and an RBI grounder by Alberto Gonzalez. They could have had more had Jonathan Van Every not been picked off.

Also, Harper grounded out to second in his lone at-bat so far.

Top 8, 3:28: The Nats trail, 7-5. Not sure of what happened except for the solo homer by Derek Norris to lead off the eighth, since reporters were down talking to Jordan Zimmermann. He said his elbow felt great. He wondered if his elbow would feel stiff between innings, but he was pleased by the fact that it did not.

Bot 4, 2:38: Garrett Mock is out of the game, and the Cardinals have taken a 5-2 lead. Mock yielded a two-run single, and McCatty yanked him. Mock didn't get help from Danny Espinosa's error, but he didn't help himself with three walks, either. Tim Wood came on to pitch, and he got out of the inning on one pitch, a grounder to short.

Mock's line: 2/3 IP, 5 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 3 BB, 0 K, 1 WP

Bot 4, 2:33 The Cardinals have taken the lead against Garrett Mock. The Nats had three walks all spring before today, and Mock has three this inning. Zach Cox led off with a double to left, Skip Schumaker drew a one-out walk. Ramon Vazquez chopped to first. Morse made a charging play as Cox bolted for home, and his poor throw allowed Cox to slide in safe. Mock then walked Ryan Theriot.

After a visit from Steve McCatty, Mock induced a grounder to second by Colby Rasmus. Danny Espinosa made a costly error trying to flip the ball with his glove to Ian Desmond. Not a bad idea, just poor execution. Pujols came up with the bases loaded, and Mock walked in a run.

Mid 4, 2:13: The Nats loaded the bases on singles by Ivan Rodriguez (bloop), Wilson Ramos (rocket) and Alberto Gonzalez (low liner). Nyjer Morgan chopped weakly to first to leave 'em loaded, though.

Garrett Mock to the mound. Zimmermann's line: 3 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 43 pitches, 28 strikes.

End 3, 1:59: Jordan Zimmermann is done with his three innings, and they were scoreless innings. Zimmermann gave up a single to center by Pujols, but Michael Morse made a nice backhand play at first and started a 3-6-3 double play to end the inning.

Ryan Franklin on for the Cards. In the top of the half inning, by the way, Jayson Werth recorded his first hit, a liner to center.

Top 3, 1:49: The Nats lead, 2-0, after a Nyjer Morgan bunt single started some sloppy Cardinals' play. Alberto Gonzalez singled, and Morgan dropped an excellent bunt right down the third base line. Yadier Molina scampered to get the ball. Morgan would have been safe even if Molina did not airmail the throw, but he did. Gonzalez scored, Morgan went to third. Then he scored when Ian Desmond smoked a single to left. Jayson Werth at the plate, no outs.

End 2, 1:43: Jordan Zimmermann pitches around a few runners again. Skip Schumaker doubled to right and Ramon Vazquez walked. Zimmermann got a grounder to second and a comebacker by Theriot to get out of the inning. Oh, and Ian Desmond made a nice leaping stab for the first out of the inning.

Mid 2, 1:31: Rick Ankiel reached on a one-out walk and stole second when Yadier Molina double-clutched the throw. It was still close. Ivan Rodriguez struck out flailing at a high, outside fastball. Wilson Ramos grounded to short to end the innings. That's four ground outs to Ryan Theriot in two innings. 0-0.

End 1, 1:23 Jordan Zimmermann pitched around a pair of single to hold the Cards scoreless. Colby Rasmus singled through the middle, and Albert Pujols flared a single to center. Zimmermann struck out Mark Hamilton trying to check his swing on an inside fastball. Zach Cox flared to Alberto Gonzalez, who made a nice diving catch at third.

Mid 1, 1:12 The Nationals are off to a slow start against Cardinals' right-handed starter Brandon Dickson. Nyjer Morgan and Ian Desmond grounded to short, and Jayson Werth popped to second. Here comes Jordan Zimmermann.
