The Nationals reinstated outfielder Rick Ankiel from the 15-day disabled list today to replace Adam LaRoche on 25-man roster. The Nationals sent LaRoche to the disabled list yesterday and played with 24 players.

If Ankiel is to play today for the first time since May 2, it will have to be off the bench. Brian Bixler will start in left field, his first start in the outfield in his major league career. Bixler has played 7 1/3 innings of outfield in his career, and he appeared as an outfielder three times in his minor league career.

Bixler will give the Nationals another right-handed bat against Brewers left-hander Chris Narveson. Every Nationals bench player except Ivan Rodriguez is left-handed, which along with Bixler presence as a starting left fielder underscores an issue the Nationals currently have with their roster. Roger Bernadina, Laynce Nix and Ankiel are the three candidates to play left and center until Ryan Zimmerman returns and Jerry Hairston can rejoin the outfield mix, and those three are all left-handed.
